Uveal tract is the vascular middle coat of the eye ball. Inflammation of the uveal tract is called uveitis. Uveitis usually occurs if there is associated systemic disease in the patient either an autoimmune disease or an infectious disease, hence patients are treated in close coordination with other specialists in various branches of medicine such as rheumatologists, chest physicians, infectious disease specialists etc.
As India is a tropical country, Uveitis caused by infectious agents is common, though non-infectious uveitis is also encountered. Uveitis with complicated cataract, uveitis with glaucoma and uveitis with vitreo-retinal complications are handled in close cooperation with specialized consultants in the respective fields.
Medical management of patients with uveitis involves continuous monitoring/control of their ocular inflammation which may require systemic treatment with drugs such as steroids and immune-suppressives. It also needs close monitoring of the systemic disease in conjunction with the concerned specialists.Patients with complicated cataracts due to Uveitis are operated.
