GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a silent killer of vision. Mostly patients are asymptomatic. They don’t even realise that they are loosing vision. There’s a strong family history of glaucoma. A good clinical examination by your eye specialist detects glaucoma and confirms with some investigations. In glaucoma the optic nerve gradually looses its function due to loss of nerve fibres. Intra ocular pressure is raised but may be normal when glaucoma is first detected. Patient of glaucoma gradually loses his peripheral vision and ultimately it becomes very narrow as if he is looking through a tube – tubular vision.

Another type of glaucoma is narrow angle glaucoma where there is insufficient drainage of aqueous humour from the eye due to narrow or closed angle formed by iris and cornea leading to rise of intra ocular pressure. This may acute onset with severe pain, loss of vision and vomiting. Urgent medical attention is needed in these cases.

Some of the important other causes of glaucoma are, Advanced mature cataract, injury to the eye, prolonged use of topical steroid, iritis. Some children are born with congenital glaucoma. Some birth defects of the eyes are also responsible for early onset glaucoma.

Main aim of glaucoma management is to preserve residual vision. Lost vision can’t be regained. So early detection is important. Medical management for life long is the main treatment method. Some cases need glaucoma surgery also. Laser treatment is an important method for narrow angle glaucoma. Prophylactic laser treatment is very important to prevent attacks of narrow angle glaucoma. Glaucoma patients need regular checkup and life long follow up.
