RETINA

The eye is like a camera with a lens in front and a film (retina) at the back. The retina is located approximately two centimetres behind the pupil. It is shaped like a small cup. The retina converts the ocular image into a signal that is sent to the brain via optic nerve. The central part of the retina, called the macula, is used for central straight vision. A healthy macula is crucial for tasks involving fine vision such as reading, recognizing faces and distinguishing things. Blood is supplied to the retina and the optic nerve by blood vessels that maintain the health of these tissues. In front of the retina is the vitreous cavity, which is filled with a gel-like substance, called the vitreous.Diseases of the retina, the vitreous, and the optic nerve can cause serious vision problems.

Fortunately, most of them can now be managed satisfactorily with modern methods of diagnosis and treatment. Our clinic is well equipped with trained doctors and modern technology to diagnose and treat a multitude of vitreo-retinal conditions. Treatment includes both medical and surgical interventions.

An exclusive retinal examination may be different than a routine eye exam. It involves dilation of pupil, examination by the specialist and diagnostic testing if required. It may take about three hours for the complete examination. Dilation enlarges your pupils to allow the doctor a better view inside your eye. It is important to know that your vision will be blurred and you will be sensitive to light (photophobic) for several hours following this. Therefore, we recommend that you bring sunglasses and not drive after your appointment.

State-of-the-art equipment for investigation and diagnosis of various Vitreo retinal diseases include:

  • Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA)
  • Indocynanine Green Angiography (ICGA)
  • Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT)
  • Ultrasound B scan
  • Digital Fundus Photography

The Vitreo-Retina clinic offers medical management for various retinal conditions like Diabetic Retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion (CRVO & BRVO), Arterial occlusion (CRAO), Central serous retinopathy (CSR), Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) etc., The clinics are equipped with retinal lasers (Green laser – Double frequency YAG) with slit-lamp and indirect ophthalmoscopy delivery for treatment of these retinal conditions.  In addition, various intra-vitreal injections of Anti-VEGF drugs and steroids are used to treat macular oedema as well as choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVM).

The Vitreo-Retina clinics are involved in screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). The Vitreo-Retina clinics have operating theatres equipped with state-of-the-art vitrectomy machines, lasers and microscopes with posterior visualisation systems. Complex vitreo-retinal surgeries for repair of retinal detachment, diabetic tractional detachment, vitreous haemorrhage, macular holes and epi-retinal membranes are routinely performed. Surgeries to manage intra-ocular foreign bodies and treatment of endophthalmitis are also routinely done.
